Our House – Then & Now

Ten years ago today, we moved into our house! I was pregnant with our oldest and it’s hard to believe that much time has passed already. My decorating style has changed so much over the last several years so we’ve made a lot of changes around here, both big and small. Creating a calm and peaceful space that our family enjoys being in has become something that I am really passionate about and I’ve loved slowly making over our home, one room at a time. I thought it would be fun to take a look back at where we started and share it all with you!

Obviously, the biggest change we’ve made in our house was our kitchen remodel. It was a huge undertaking but it was so worth it in the end! We completely lightened up the space by changing to white cabinets, backsplash and counters.

When we moved in, the walls were painted hunter green and we loved it because it matched our furniture and decor perfectly at the time. But as time went on, the dark furniture and dark walls sometimes it felt a little cave-like. We painted the walls blue (Rain by Sherwin Williams), bought a new tv stand, coffee table and end table and added a lot of white decor to help make the room feel bright and fresh. Sometimes I wish we would have bought a lighter sectional but this one hides dirt and stains well which is a must-have with our kids!

This room has gone through so, so many changes over the past 10 years. The previous owners used it as a very formal and fancy living room. We knew we didn’t want that so I moved my scrapbook stuff into the space before our daughter was born.

Once our kids started getting older (and the toys started getting bigger), we kept changing the space to accommodate their stuff. We’ve tried cubes and bins, shelves, drawers, plastic containers. You name it, we had it in there to try and contain their toys. Finally we decided that it made more sense to move my stuff out and set it up in our spare bedroom upstairs and give them free reign of the room.
This past winter, we purchased Ikea cabinets and a new rug and once again, revamped the space. I honestly love it SO much! It keeps their toys contained, neat and organized!

Our original kitchen remodel plans called for our old walk-in pantry (that’s down the hall from the kitchen) to be made into a mudroom. One of the walls would have been knocked down so that it would be open to the laundry room and be one big space.

When the quote came back, the cost of that part of the job was astronomical! Like crazy high. It just wasn’t affordable for us so we nixed that whole section and decided to tackle things on our own. The laundry room still isn’t done but we got the mudroom finished up and I absolutely love it! I’m going to do a whole post about our set-up in the future. The drawers from Ikea are perfect for keeping everyone’s stuff organized and in one place. I think it’s even better than what we would have gotten from the remodel and we did it for a fraction of the cost!

The other big project we tackled was the backyard. We knocked down around 20 trees when we moved in and put in an inground pool, built a cabana and added a brick paver patio and landscaping. I don’t have pictures of the yard before we moved in but here are a few as it is now.
It’s amazing to think of how much we’ve done since we moved in 10 years ago! Next on my list is tackling the laundry room and doing some cosmetic changes to our bathrooms (paint, light fixtures and mirrors).

Thanks for taking this walk down memory lane with me!
